1. What is AWD?

Most all-wheel drive (AWD) systems allow your vehicle to automatically decide when to drive all four wheels. Adaptive, balancing fuel economy and traction needs.

AWD Advantages

Thinks for itself, can focus on driving, balancing fuel economy and extra traction

2. What is 4WD?

Most four-wheel drive (sometimes written as 4WD or 4x4) vehicles connect the front and rear wheels together, splitting power evenly between them. They are rugged, but their practicality on paved roads is more limited, and they usually only provide power to the rear wheels.

4WD Advantages

Rugged, built to handle more extreme conditions, suitable for off-road driving, vehicles with more traction.

If you drive on paved roads and do some light off-roading to get to campsites or trailheads, an all-wheel drive vehicle is more appropriate. If you do more heavy off-roading, especially off-roading involving more mud, rocks, or slippery slopes, or if you need to tow a heavy trailer, choose a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Both AWD and 4WD send the engine's power to all four wheels of the vehicle to maximize available traction. AWD uses a variable connection that your vehicle can adjust at any time at any speed to shift power where it's needed. 4WD connects your front and rear wheels via a transfer case that evenly distributes power and is designed for lower speeds and challenging terrain.

But generally speaking, AWD is designed for on-road driving and light off-road use. 4WD is designed for off-road use to help larger, heavier vehicles get out of trouble, and it requires more thinking from the driver.
